This is a question that is often asked and and one could easily argue that spending money on all of these supplements is a big waste.

BUT – and it’s a big BUT – this is true if the food you’re eating is nutrient-dense.

As Mark Hyman puts it –

‘this is only true if you eat wild, fresh, whole, organic, local, non-genetically modified food grown in virgin mineral and nutrient rich soils, and not transported across vast distances and stored for months before eaten.’

…and he doesn’t stop there…

‘It is true ONLY if you work and live outside, breathe only fresh unpolluted air, drink only pure, clean water, sleep nine hours a night, move your body every day, and are free from chronic stressors and exposures to environmental toxins.’

Unfortunately in today’s world, our food supply has become so very processed that much of the goodness is lost.

The impact on us is that many of us are deficient in certain vitamins and minerals, and some seriously deficient.

For instance, if we look at the science:

‘in a study published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition, researchers found that 6 percent of those tested had serious vitamin C deficiency and 30 percent were borderline low.’

Similarly,

‘a USDA survey showed that 37 percent of Americans don’t get enough vitamin C, 70 percent not enough vitamin E, almost 75 percent don’t get enough zinc, and 40 percent don’t get enough iron.’

Whilst the reasons for our over-processed food supply can’t be tackled over night, the big question therefore becomes:

‘what supplements do I need?’

..and the answer, as ever, will vary depending on our genetic make-up, life-style and other factors individual to us.

For example, following a lot of research and different tests, I now take the following supplements which I buy online from Cytoplane

  • Fish oil
  • Flax oil
  • B12
  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin D
  • Magnesium

Currently I don’t take a high-quality multivitamin, although many people recommend this and there’s certainly a huge amount of research which suggests this is a good thing to do.

Mark Hyman has ‘tested thousands of patients for vitamin and nutrient deficiencies and found that by correcting them, people feel better, their mood, mental sharpness, memory, and ability to focus improve, they have more energy, and they even lose weight. It also helps prevent disease.’
