Untitled design (6)

I was in Brighton last week, attending the D’Construct Conference, a colourful event full of a collection of different people with different backgrounds, brought together to discuss technology, design and lifestyle.

It was a good event and I encourage you to look out for the video coverage as there were quite a few interesting speakers.

One speaker that stood out for me was Clare Reddington who talked about designing playful experiences that change our relationships with the places we live and work. This idea of using fun design to engage people and help encourage them to change their behaviour and improve their wellbeing really resonated with me and got me thinking about all kinds of entertaining ways to make positive wellbeing fun, engaging and most importantly sustainable.

To understand what i mean, here’s a really good example of an experiment that was designed to encourage more people to walk up the stairs instead of the escalator.

Quite a different approach, and one that supports the key point that when exercise is enjoyable, you don’t even realise that you are doing it! That’s certainly my experience when running with someone else verses alone. When I am with someone else, time literally seems to fly as we’re engaged in conversation.

Have a think about your workspace or your town, or even your home, and consider how the fun element could be incorporated to encourage movement. I am really interested in your ideas, so do share your thoughts in the comment section below.
