Over a decade ago now, I stumbled upon a book that opened my eyes. It was called ‘Detox Your World’, by Shazzie.
By the end, I felt like my body was swimming in chemicals and poisons gathered from the processed foods I was eating, the water I was drinking, the mobile phone I was using, the clothes I was wearing, the carpet I was walking on, and even the toothpaste I smeared on my teeth each day.
I remember feeling anxious about the health risks I had exposed myself to by consuming things, unaware of the risks they posed! So, with knowledge came power and I decided to take steps to detox my world, and introduce a more systematic approach of cleansing and detoxing my body to reduce the health and performance risks an overexposure to toxins can post.
I took the approach that it’s better to do more things right, than everything right as it can be overwhelming, so here is part I of II on my methods of how to detox your world, based on this philosophy.
10 years down the line, here are some of the detox your world strategies that I still adopt today which have detoxed my world and changed it for the better.
Now you can do the same with yours – giving you more energy and increased performance:
1. Remember to keep the exits clear.
Your body is designed to get rid of toxins through the main exits: the skin, lungs, bladder and large intestines. If the way out is blocked, the toxins can’t get out and will have no choice but to go deep into the cells of your body. Once you know that your body is trying to expel toxins, you can start to educate yourself as to how to support the process.
2. Drink green tea instead of coffee.
I know, if you’re a coffee lover, this suggestion is going to get you saying ‘no, no, no’, but hear me out. Swapping your coffee for green tea will still give you the caffeine boost you need, and provide important antioxidants that your body needs to cleanse. I made the swap 10 years ago, and haven’t looked back. Try it for two weeks and see how you feel. You can always go back – read more about the swap here.
3. Eat organic.
Organic food has less chemicals than non-organic food, but is often more expensive. So if your budget can’t stretch to organic everything, then start with foods that are highest in pesticides and preservatives and can therefore be consumed and ingested by you. The top three to buy organic are apples, celery and strawberries. Check out our article on switching over here.
4. Replace a meal each day with a detoxifying smoothie.
When it comes to naturally cleansing the body, a method that works for many people is replacing just one meal a day with a healthy smoothie. By healthy, I mean one with natural ingredients at the core, not one that is made up of of ice cream, chocolate and peanut butter. As delicious as that may sound, this recipe will certainly help add plenty of toxins, rather than reduce them. Sorry. For inspiration, here’s a link to interesting info on why you should drink green smoothies and here’s a great smoothie recipe that has proved popular with our team.
5. Drink, drink, drink.
70% of our bodies are made up of water, so drinking regularly is a good habit to get into. All water, though, is not equal. At the ‘premium end’ of the water market is pure spring water, freely available from springs, so if you live near a spring and are happy to fill up your glass bottles with this pure substance, your body will thank you. Check out our article on buying bottled water plus a great resource to find your closest freshwater spring. Chances are, though, that this habit is going to be hard to implement, so instead, consider installing a water purification system to remove ions, molecules and particles from your drinking water. There are lots of nasties in tap water, so a one-off investment will make a big difference over time.
